Fuel is a store house of energy. It is any substance that can be manipulated into a controlled release of its energy. 'Controlled release' being the operative word because an element that reacts instantaneously or alters its chemical makeup when in contact with Oxygen cannot be deemed fuel. Hydrocarbons are the most commonly explored sources of energy. They are stable and have limitless uses. Petroleum, diesel, gasoline are some examples of fuels extracted from hydrocarbons, which also go by the name of fossil fuels. However these fuels run the risk of depletion which most trade and industry analysts fear is imminent and will happen at some point in the near future. Thus, keeping in view the possibility of running out of a resource that we have grown so accustomed to and the adverse effects it causes in terms of environmental pollution, many nations are pumping billions into researching alternative options to replace conventional fuels.

The quest for alternative forms of fuel has received great impetus in the modern times. The extensive and in depth research in this field bears testimony to man's interest in exploring the DNA of fuel and the urgent need to find substitutes to fossil fuels. The search hasn't been completely futile, scientists have been successful to a great extent in discovering hidden sources of energy in some commonly found chemicals and substances or in their combinations that can be obtained in considerable amounts or reserves.

This week OilVoice takes a peek in to the world of alternative fuels and lists five fuels that are steadily gaining momentum and acceptance among the masses......
